Historic Heights Pittsburg California
Pittsburg, California was a small, industrial town in 1950 located some fifty miles east of San Francisco, along the Sacramento-San Joaquin River. In November of 1950 Alexander V. Avdonin arrived in San Francisco to start a new life and build a family with his wife Zina and mother Clara. Of Russian decent their immigration was sponsered by a Baptist Group in Oakland aiding displaced war refugees. This group was able to place Alexander Avdonin in the Pittsburg Steel Mill as an Electrician; and helped him to buy a home at 145 Heights in Pittsburg. For the next 13 years he built a life for his wife and three subsequent childern - it was the American Dream. (Next column -->)
Alexandra A. Avdonin - The Immigrant's Daughter
Alexandra Avdonin was Alex's
daughter. This is a compilation of her memories of those people who lived in
Pittsburg Heights and went to school with her. Time is frozen at around 1966: the
year these children graduated sixth grade at Height Elementary School.
