"Historic Heights"
NEIGHBORHOOD MAP
We all walked or rode our bikes to Heights Elementary School then. There were vacant lots to play softball. Here are the locations where we lived. (Click markers and follow the links for more information about individuals.) |

Carol Klien - Looking North from 167 Linscheid circa 1958.
Carol Klien: "My dad & me probably 1957 or 1958 in front of our house on 167 Linscheid Dr.
You can look across the street and see there were no houses then; you can see all the way to
the filtration plant. It was all field to Heights Elementary. My mom said the Army used to
bring sheep out there to 'mow' the field."

The houses were built after World War II circa 1950 in a new subdivision named "Heights". Most of the houses were 2 or 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1 car garage. They varied in floor plans, fascades, roof type and color. Some lots were oversized for larger houses and yards. West Blvd and surrounding streets had 4 Plex units called "Garden Apartments". On the South of Mae and the North of Marks, the floor plans, roofs were virtually identical: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, 1 car garage. The fascades varied slightly with the porch type and enterance. They were painted white with a alternating color trim and roof: blue, green, brown, red, and grey. Prices were around $10,000.
