Historic Mae Avenue Pittsburg California
Pittsburg, California was a small, industrial town in 1950 located some fifty miles east of San Francisco, along the Sacramento-San Joaquin River. In November of 1950 Alexander V. Avdonin arrived in San Francisco to start a new life and build a family with his wife Zina and mother Clara. Of Russian decent their immigration was sponsered by a Baptist Group in Oakland aiding displaced war refugees. This group was able to place Alexander Avdonin in the Pittsburg Steel Mill as an Electrician; and helped him to buy a home at 145 Mae Avenue in Pittsburg. For the next 13 years he built a life for his wife and three subsequent childern - it was the American Dream. (Next column -->)
Alexander V. Avdonin - The Immigrant
Nickolas Avdonin was Alex's oldest son. This is a compilation of his memories of those people who also lived the American Dream with Alex. Communities were much closer in the 50's. You knew who your neighbors were. They interacted with each other. The children played together in the yards. So please enter "Historic Mae Avenue".
